I’ve decided to dedicate this blog post solely for explaining the reasons why I switched to a more natural skincare routine and why I think you should, too. Our skin is one of the largest detoxification organs and it seems that most of the time we forget that it absorbs whatever we put on it. This is why it is so important to use products that are chemical-free as our bodies do not need any extra toxins that are loaded into most cosmetic products! Therefore, for me, adopting a more natural approach to skincare and what we put on our body’s largest organ is a natural extension of choosing to eat more healthily. I have been transitioning to a more natural skincare options for almost two years now (with a complete switch happening about half a year ago) and it is doing wonders for me and my skin!
REASONS TO GO NATURAL
NO TOXIC CHEMICALS
Ever-growing army of chemically manufactured preservatives, thickeners, colourants, fragrances and fillers are packed into so many of the everyday beauty products we buy, from deodorant and toothpaste to body scrubs and lotions. Until only recently we assumed they must be good for us. Why switch to a more natural skincare? Organic, natural skincare products have no hidden nasty chemicals such as the ones mentioned above! Genuine organic refers to ingredients that are derived from non-genetically modified plants and must be grown, handled and processed in an ecological way, without the use of pesticides or other synthetic chemicals, irradiation, fertilizers, etc. Ideally look for brands that have authentic certifications such as USDA, ACO, Soil Association (pp. 46-50), Eco Cert, Natrue, etc. that contain around 95% of organic ingredients. If want to know more, also read about COSMOS-standard HERE and HERE.
Growing your awareness in terms of product labelling and marketing strategies is extremely important so that you can immediately spot ‘greenwashing’, which simply means that a company or organisation is claiming to be ‘green’ through advertising and marketing, misleading consumers to think that a certain product is ‘green, natural or eco-friendly’ when it really isn’t. So, the next time you see a ‘green’ claim, ask yourself — is that really true? Because the last thing you want to do is to spend money on a product you believe is doing right for the environment, but in reality — is not. So, always read the label!
It is now clear that some of the chemicals can affect and interfere with our hormonal system and development. Therefore those are usually referred to as ‘endocrine disruptors’ (endocrine is just another word for hormones), which come from all sorts of places including food, food packaging, cleaning and cosmetic products, air that we breathe and skin. Endocrine disruptors can cause alterations to fertility for both men and women, interfere with immune system and possibly increase the risk of breast cancer as well as causing a variety of developmental problems in toddlers.
Unfortunately, a great deal of chemicals that we are constantly being exposed to (e.g. inhalation of particles from the air) we cannot control. However, we sure need to remember that there are many things that we can and should control for a better health. This includes the reduction of chemicals that we put on our skin and use in our household (i.e. cleaning products).
ESCAPE THE INFLUENCE OF SKINCARE SPHERE
In the whirlwind age we live in, where stress and disease levels are permanently on the rise, and we find ourselves constantly consuming under the influence of multifunctional corporations, consciously returning to a natural way of living, in harmony with the planet, is one of the most empowering things we can do. And nowhere is this more pressing than in the skincare sphere.
BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY
There are so many chemicals in overall commercial use that have not yet been tested for all of the effects meaning that there are so much uncertainty about the potential risks that it may cause. In 2012 the World Health Organisation published a report where it mentions that health risks from these chemicals may be significantly underestimated. However, there is still a lot of research that needs to be done to fully investigate and understand its impact on our health. Therefore while research on the potential dangers of chemicals that are present in everyday products is growing, and laws are tightening in areas to reflect this, as consumers we need to keep our eyes wide open and consciously foster a healthy curiosity about what exactly we are putting on our skin. I personally feel that playing a safe card in this situation is the best decision to make.
WE USE IT EVERYDAY FOR YEARS ON END
It is just as important as what we eat, if not more so, for the sole reason that throughout the day, week and year we vary our diet and eating habits, yet we tend to loyally clutch on to one chemical-filled toothpaste, shaving cream and deodorant and use it once or twice a day for years on end.
WHAT WE PUT ON OUR SKIN – SOAKS IN!
Taking into account that skin is the largest organ of our body it needs to be treated right. Putting all kinds of lotions and potions on the skin for a long time gives more opportunity for chemical absorption into our bloodstream! If you don’t think our skin absorbs whatever is applied on it, then just think about nicotine and birth control patches — how come they work then? Some of the top products to look for the cleanest ingredients are anything that you may soak in, such a bubble bath or anything that you apply and don’t wash off, such as lotions, face creams, serums, etc. Therefore, if you are planning on switching to a more natural skincare, I recommend starting with the products designed to be absorbed into your skin first.
REDUCE IMPACT ON LANDFILL
Environmental awareness is most often at the top of natural skincare company business ethos. Most of the natural skincare products are environmentally conscious, meaning that they are intentionally created to reduce unnecessary consumption and overall environmental impact.
SUPPORT EARTH’S SAFE FARMING PRACTICES
The products used in natural skincare should be grown without the use of pesticides or artificial fertilisers, meaning you are not only doing your skin a favour, but also encourage earth safe farming practices by choosing products that are genuine organic and natural.
NATURAL SKINCARE DOESN’T HAVE TO BE BORING
Today there are so many amazing eco brands all over the world so we really are spoilt for a choice! Thus I am not saying you should ditch all the products and just use baking soda and apple cider vinegar for everything! Hell no! I don’t want to do that either. I love to have some nicely packaged products on my bathroom shelf or a really good bronzer in my make up bag, but now I just think twice before I buy something. There are some amazing natural skincare products that I’ve discovered over the past two years and I will be sharing all of them with you in upcoming posts.
NATURAL SKINCARE — SENCE OF FREEDOM AND SATISFACTION
Ever since I’ve decided to give up toxic chemicals in my skincare routine, I felt amazing! I felt free of influences of those big multinational beauty corporations that pays every beauty YouTuber to push thousands if not millions of new chemical loaded skincare products every single day. I used to be lost, out of touch with my own world, constantly influenced by this!
When the next time you buy yourself a new skincare product, think twice what good does it do in terms of your health.
Healthy is the new beautiful.
